MA2: Fermion-boson Simulation
Advanced simulation problems in chemical dynamics or high-energy physics require treatment of coupled fermion-boson models. We will pursue novel hardware solutions that use native bosonic degrees of freedom and optimize qubit-based systems through co-design. For these tasks, our Institute will leverage a multitude of experimental spin-boson or fermion-boson simulation platforms: trapped-ions, Rydberg-atom arrays, molecular arrays, superconducting circuits, and moire materials platforms. This diverse set of platforms enables us to implement models more natively, thereby reducing both error and overhead.
While MA1 focuses exclusively on fermionic models, MA2 consists of four focus areas that rely on developing and deploying spin-boson quantum simulators.
- Focus area 2.1: Fermion-boson simulators for gauge-theory simulations.
- Focus area 2.2: Fermion-boson simulators for condensed-matter physics.
- Focus area 2.3: Fermion-boson simulators for chemical dynamics.
- Focus area 2.4: Fermion-boson quantum computing and fault tolerance.
We will pursue novel hardware solutions that use native bosonic degrees of freedom, and optimize qubit-based systems through co-design.
